Compute
The Compute menu brings together everything that runs workloads: virtual machines and what they are built from. Resources from every connected platform appear in the same lists, with a column showing where each one lives.
Virtual machines
Compute › VM instance lists every virtual machine you can see in your current view.
- Filter and search by name, IP address, status, platform, region, project or tag. Save a column layout and export the list from the toolbar.
- Create a virtual machine on a connected platform. Choose the region and zone, the specification (CPU and memory), the image, the disks, the network and the security groups, and a password or key pair for sign-in.
- Everyday actions from the row menu: start, stop, restart, open the remote console, change the specification, attach or detach disks, bind an elastic IP, change security groups, reset the password, save as an image, and delete.
- Batch actions apply start, stop, restart and delete to several machines at once.
What each platform allows differs. A platform whose API cannot resize a machine does not offer resizing in Constella either. Actions that a machine's platform does not support are hidden or disabled.
Remote console
The remote console opens in a new browser tab through Constella itself, so it works without direct network access to the machine. It relies on the published address being set correctly (see Installation).
Images
Compute › Images holds the operating-system images used to create machines. They include public images synchronized from clouds, custom images you upload, and images saved from existing machines. Server Images are whole-machine images that include every disk.
Disks, snapshots and backups
- Disks lists system and data disks. You can create, attach, detach, resize and delete them.
- Snapshots capture a disk at a point in time. Snapshot Policies take snapshots on a schedule and delete old ones.
- Disk Backup and Instance Backup copy disks or whole machines to backup storage.
Networking for machines
- Security Groups are sets of firewall rules attached to machines. Rules are evaluated per machine; a machine can have several groups.
- IP Subnet and EIP manage the addresses machines use. Elastic IPs are public addresses you can move between machines.
- Keypairs holds SSH public keys that can be injected into Linux machines at creation.
Specifications
Specification lists the machine sizes (CPU and memory combinations) available on each platform and region. The create form offers only the sizes that fit the chosen location.
Physical resources
In System View, Physical Resources shows the hosts behind private platforms: Hosts (hypervisors, for example ESXi hosts synchronized from vCenter) and Physical Machines (bare-metal servers). Use it to check capacity and which machines run where.
Trash
Deleted machines, disks and images can go to Trash first, depending on your installation's settings. Restore them from there, or delete them for good.
