Cloud Accounts
A cloud account connects Constella to one cloud or virtualization platform. Once connected, Constella brings the platform's resources into its inventory and keeps them in step. From then on you can work on those resources from Constella.
Cloud accounts are managed in System View under Multicloud › Accounts.
Before you start
- Credentials. Use a dedicated account on the platform, not a personal one. Give it the permissions for everything you want Constella to see and do. With read-only credentials, Constella can list resources but not change them.
- Reachability. The Constella engine must reach the platform's API endpoint. If it cannot, create a proxy first in Multicloud › Proxy and select it when you add the account.
- VMware. Set up the networks you want Constella to use before adding a vCenter or ESXi account. The account's address cannot be changed after it is added; to point at another vCenter, add a new account.
- OpenStack. After the account is imported, set the capacity of the imported block storage under Storage › Block Storage. Creating a server may fail until you do.
Add a cloud account
Open Multicloud › Accounts and click Create.
Select Cloud Platform. Choose the platform, for example VMware, OpenStack, Proxmox, AWS or Alibaba Cloud.
Configure Cloud Account. Enter a name and the connection details the platform needs:
Platform Connection details VMware vCenter or ESXi address, port, username, password Proxmox VE Access address, port, and the authentication method with its credentials OpenStack Authentication URL (for example https://keystone.example.com:5000/v3), project, username, password, domainS3-compatible, Ceph, XSKY Access address, access key and secret, signing algorithm version Public clouds The access key or service-principal credentials the provider issues. The form's help link explains where to find them. Also choose the project that newly discovered resources belong to.
Configure Sync Region. Choose which regions to synchronize. Leaving out regions you do not use makes synchronization faster.
Scheduled sync task settings (optional). Set how often Constella synchronizes the account automatically.
Click OK. Constella tests the connection and starts the first synchronization. The time it takes depends on how many resources the platform has.
Keep the account in step
Constella synchronizes each account automatically. To pick up changes made directly on the platform straight away, choose Sync Account from the account's action menu.
| Setting | What it does |
|---|---|
| Setup Auto Sync | Turns scheduled synchronization on or off and sets its interval |
| Test Setup | Checks that Constella can still reach the platform with the stored credentials |
| Update Credential | Replaces the credentials, for example after a password rotation |
| Set up proxy | Changes the proxy used to reach the platform |
| Read only mode | Blocks changes through Constella; resources can still be listed and monitored |
Decide who owns synchronized resources
By default, resources from a cloud account go into the project you chose when adding it. Two features refine that:
- Sync policies (Multicloud › Sync Policy) place resources in projects by rule, for example by a tag on the cloud resource. Attach a policy with Set sync policy on the account.
- Set up sharing makes an account available to other domains, for example to let several tenants use the same vCenter.
Health and troubleshooting
The account list shows each account's Health Status and whether auto sync is on.
| Symptom | Likely cause and fix |
|---|---|
| Status shows a connection or authentication error | The address is unreachable or the credentials changed. Check network access or the proxy, then use Update Credential. |
| Some resources are missing | The account's credentials cannot see them, or their region is excluded from sync. Check the platform permissions and the region settings, then sync again. |
| Resources show up in the wrong project | Adjust the sync policy or the account's project mapping, then sync again. |
| An action such as resize is not offered | The platform does not support that action. What Constella offers depends on each platform's capabilities. |
