VMware to CEP

This guide covers migrating a VMware VM into the Awanio CEP target (a KubeVirt cluster). It continues from the shared steps in the User Guide — make sure you have enabled CBT (for warm migration) and signed in to Condensa first.

Before you start: complete Enable CBT and Sign in to Condensa from the overview. This guide picks up from the CEP-specific snapshot step.

Create a snapshot (MANDATORY for warm CEP, after enabling CBT)

The CEP data plane (CDI) does not create snapshots itself, so for a warm migration you must take one manually after CBT is enabled. (Cold migrations of a powered-off VM do not need this step.)

1. Right-click the VM → Snapshots → Take Snapshot

2. Fill in the Name and Description, then click Take snapshot

   ⚠️ Important: The snapshot MUST be created AFTER enabling CBT. Snapshots created before CBT is enabled will cause migration failure.

Add the CEP provider

Click the Provider tab, then click the Add Provider button.

A form will appear. Fill in the CEP provider data and click the Create Provider button at the bottom of the form to save.

The provider data will be displayed.

Create the migration

Click the Migrations tab, then click the Create Migration button.

1. Fill in information such as migration name, description, and the target organization and project in Awanio, then click Next.

2. Select the Provider (and Datacenter for the VMware provider options), then click Next.

3. Select the VM to be migrated, then click Next.

4. On the Mapping step, set what applies to every VM: the name prefix, the default network, new MAC addresses, and Power on the VM after migration — leave that unchecked to keep the migrated VM powered off until you start it yourself, which avoids an identity conflict with a source that is still running. Each VM's card below can be given its own answer instead. Then click Next. Turning off the default network on a VM's card needs CEP 3.9.0 or later; an earlier CEP attaches it anyway.

5. Review the migration. If it is OK, click Create Migration.

6. The migration will appear in the list with a Preparing status.

Start the migration

1. Click the action menu button (three dots on the right side of the row), then select Start Migration.

2. The migration starts, the status changes to Running, and progress increases toward 100%.

3. After success, the status changes to Success.

4. Migration details can be viewed by clicking on the migration name.

5. Check the VM on the Awanio Dashboard and make sure it is running well.
